About Us

Muslim Women’s Development Trust (MWDT) was established in 2011 under the trust ordinance registration. The organization was developed with the support of the 1st implemented project – Women Defining Peace (WDP), funded by a Canadian donor in 2011. Since the formation of MWDT, its members have been involved in promoting Muslim women’s rights and wellbeing, and have supported grassroots groups’ collective activism, especially to address the issues that Muslim women face. This is done through local and international mechanisms.

Our Story

This website has been developed to promote the marketing and economic transformation of women artisans from poverty-stricken and women-headed households in Puttalam district.

They are specially trained with a view of providing quality products to the markets, which are chemical free and have utilized the locally available raw materials in the interest of a healthy society.

In order to increase their productivity, they were trained in business planning, distribution systems, business management, business accounting, budgeting, marketing, digital marketing, and other business related guidelines.

We trained them in a sophisticated manner with the help of the Industrial Development Board, Department of Agriculture, Coconut Research Institute, and in collaboration with other government departments. Some of those trainings were carried out by skilled and well experienced instructors.

Apart from these, we also help them for their business registration process and for proper plant consultancy along with the industrial guidelines of manufacturing. The productions are done by women groups, individually and with their own family members, and those who had no income are now able to earn enough to meet their daily family needs and expenditures.

But to increase the efficiency, more technical methods are required. Despite further financial assistance and machinery requirements, these entrepreneurs are now continuing the production through the trainings they have received. And selling them in their own villages and districts as well.

Their products need to be further standardized. But their products are tastier and better in quality. Therefore, by purchasing these products, we also can contribute for the livelihood development of these women entrepreneurs.

We hope that everyone will join hands with us to help them.

The Executive Director Of MWDT

There is a possibility that the products of these women will become quality products. And in future, the products will be with high quality that are suitable for exportation. Therefore, the opportunity to reach the foreign market will be very high. Through utilizing the locally available raw materials, we obtain the best hygienic products. Also, we try our best to increase the quality and technical capacity of these women. So that their products can meet the export quality.
